Pastor Dan’s article

Recently in a discussion in our Sunday School class, we were discussing the breakdown of family structure in our culture. While it’s easy to blame the current generation for letting this happen, we reflected on the past generations and remembered how many men sent their wives and children to church while he did something else.
Yes, it all started many years ago and has derailed into what we have today.
Having said this, I want to encourage you all with some of the things we can do to make ourselves better parents and grandparents.
There is a wonderful wisdom saying in Proverbs. “Bring up a child in the way he should go and when they are old they will not soon depart from it”. (Proverbs 22:6)
We love our children and grandchildren and treat them well yet sometimes they turn away from us.
Sometimes they journey on roads we do not understand or roads that we do not approve of.
But in the end if our hearts are open, if the foundation is well laid, we see them return to us much as the Prodigal Son returned to his Father.
This seems to be the record of things. If the door is open, they will normally pass through it.
I think part of the problem we have as parents is not that we have difficult children or even that they speak a different language than we do though all this is very often true.
I am convinced a portion of the problem is that we as parents often do not know the way our children should go. And more importantly even when we know the way we so often fail to live it.And so, our children become angry, distant, alienated from us and from God.
So, what is the way?
As parents and grandparents we must actually live Godly lives. We must keep promises concerning our relationship to the Lord. We must keep our promises in our relationship with our family and our relationships with other people. We must be mature in the faith and be the spiritual examples of the family as God has called us to be. We must commit ourselves to building strong biblical marriages and support the mission of Christ with our time, talents, and with our prayers. We must devote ourselves to demonstrating the love of Christ in our community. We are to live moral and virtuous lives based on scriptural principles. The result will not only be the renewal of our own lives as Christians; It will bring renewal to our families, to our churches, to our community and ultimately to our world.

And it is working it is working because the secret of all successful marriages and of all successful parenting and grand parenting always rests in two sets of hands.
First and foremost, in the hand of God and secondly in our hands. If we allow those hands to be linked together the results are incredible.
Lives are changed. Lives improve. Families are healed.
If we lead godly lives then the odds are that our children and grandchildren will lead Godly lives.
If we seriously want to do something to bring change in the family breakdown in America, then we need to get serious about living our own lives the way God desires.

Love in Christ,
Pastor Dan

Pastor Dan’s Article

24/7
A young soldier and his commanding officer boarded a train together.
The only available seats were across from an attractive young women who was traveling with her elderly grandmother.
As they engaged in pleasant conversation, the soldier and the young woman kept eying one another, the attraction was obviously mutual.
Suddenly the train went into a tunnel and the car became pitch dark.
Immediately two sounds were heard: the “smack” of a kiss, then the “whack” of a slap across the face.
The grandmother thought “I can’t believe he kissed my granddaughter, but I’m glad she gave him a slap he deserved.”
The commanding officer thought, “I don’t blame the boy for kissing girl, but it’s a shame she missed his face and hit me instead.”
The young girl thought, “I’m glad he kissed me, but I wish my grandmother hadn’t slapped him for doing it.”
As the train broke into the sunlight, the soldier could not wipe the smile off his face.
He had just seized the opportunity to kiss a pretty girl and slap his commanding officer and he had gotten away with both!
That young soldier knew how to seize an opportunity!

In the same way, we must take advantage of every opportunity that comes our way to seize the day.
So often we get caught up in the details of day to day living that we just do not have the time or make the time to seize the day.
We have deadlines and commitments, problems, and priorities, distractions and obstacles.
And though we really want greater fulfillment it just seems to be outside of our grasp.
By nature, we want our lives to be full and prosperous.
Paul shares these words with the Believers gathered in Ephesus and to us this day:
“Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:15-17
We have been given a mission and that mission could easily be code named 24/7!
We are to be reflections of Jesus Christ 24/7!
We are to shine His light of The Good News 24/7!
Our lives are to be a testimony to His light in us 24/7!
We are Christ followers.
We are not, Christ fans.
Fans sit on the sidelines, followers get into and are active on the field of play. It is time to get off the sideline. It is time to Seize the Day, Twenty-four Seven!

Pastor Dan’s Article

Depth of Insight – Discernment

Paul prays for his friends in Philippi in 1:9-11, asking that God’s work in their lives would abound more and more and lead to greater knowledge and depth of insight. This is a single word in the original text (aesthesis) and Phil. 1:10 is its only appearance in the New Testament. Many versions of the Bible use “discernment” as an alternative translation of this word.
the phrase jumped out at me and I wondered when I had last prayed for “abounding love and increased discernment” in the lives of my family and friends. I quickly realized that I really don’t pray for people like Paul prayed for the Philippians.

I started to wonder why Paul prayed in this way. What does discernment have to do with love? And why does Paul think it’s so important?

Then I started to think about my own life – the areas in which I struggle, the sins for which I repeatedly ask for forgiveness. Have you ever noticed the insidious power of sin to lead to more sin? We think or do the wrong thing the first time with a kind of shuddering reluctance, but it comes easier the second (and third, and fourth)
time. If we go on in this way, we’ll end up with no remorse at all. Our hearts have hardened; our sensitivity is gone.

Paul’s prayer is for a spoke in this wheel of self-destruction. He wants his friends in Philippi to have that quality of heart and mind which remains sensitive to that which is wrong; to be wise and perceptive in the conduct of our everyday life. Left to ourselves, we lack the wisdom and power to pursue things that lead to life. God, in his grace, gives us a “depth of insight.”
This is a worthy prayer.
And this is a new part of my prayer life for myself and all of you as I pray.

Love in Christ,

Pastor Dan

Pastor Dan’s Article

For the last 1,500 years, Christians have been using Psalm 95 as a call to worship. This psalm is sometimes referred to as the “Venite” (which is the Latin translation of the opening word, “come”) or the “Invitatory” because of its function as an invitation to worship.
I want to reflect a bit on Psalm 95 because it is a biblical description of what’s going on when we gather every week for worship. I notice at least three things about how we’re to set about this task of praising God.

First, we enter into worship deliberately: “Come” we’re told (95:1); “Let us come!” (95:2). Worship doesn’t happen by accident; it’s a movement, a turning from one set of preoccupations, one sphere of life and activity, towards another. Where do we turn? In the direction of the presence of God himself. This move isn’t natural – it can only be made with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit – but enabled by God, we are to place ourselves before his face.

Worship involves an urgent, deliberate turning towards God.

Second, worship is earnest. It has a measure of intensity. “Let us shout aloud to the Rock of our Salvation [and] extol him with music and song.” (95:1-2) Scholars debate whether Psalm 95 is an accurate picture of the services that took place in the Temple. If so, worship in ancient Israel was exuberant – a loud, undignified succession of voices and instruments. Wouldn’t it be great if our hearts were so full of joy in worship that we couldn’t help but shout our praise to God? Having said that I do believe there is a way of engaging with God that is quiet and non-demonstrative yet just as intense. What matters ultimately is that our worship arises from and gives voice to deep joy in God.

Deliberate. Earnest.

Third and finally, the worship into which Psalm 95 invites us is public, not private. It’s addressed to the people of God: “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture.” (95:6-7) You might say worship is not the deliberate, earnest movement of one heart towards God, it’s the action of a community. This is not to deny that worship is also a private matter. The individual does business with God, and no one can do it for us. But God is my God (Psalm 63:1) only insofar as he is the God of his chosen people.

Deliberate. Passionate. Communal. May God help our worship express all that Psalm 95 describes.

Love in Christ,

Pastor Dan

March Article

Overcoming Temptation
Occasionally, the more time I spend with a passage from Scripture, the less sure I am about what I think about it. Such has been my experience with the deceptively familiar request in the Lord’s Prayer: “Lead us not into temptation.” It turns out, confusion – a better word might be consternation – surrounding this phrase has been around for a long time. The African theologian Tertullian, writing about the Lord’s Prayer in A.D. 192, questioned whether God would ever truly tempt his children: “Far be the thought that the Lord should seem to tempt, as if He were either ignorant of [the limits] of someone’s faith, or else eager to overthrow [that faith].”
Much more recently, Pope Francis has considered changing the wording of this phrase in Roman Catholic liturgy to “let us not fall into temptation.” This suggestion has produced significant (and thoughtful) backlash.

I don’t know where I stand on the correct wording of the Lord’s Prayer. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter. What does matter is what I do when faced with temptation (regardless of who is behind it). On this question, I find Martin Luther a helpful guide. He counsels us to recognize our powerlessness in the face of evil and turn to God in Christ for help.

A few verses from A Mighty Fortress is our God express this idea beautifully:
A mighty fortress is our God,
A bulwark never failing;
Our helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing;
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and pow’r are great,
And armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not His equal

And tho’ this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph thro’ us;
The prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him

So too does the following promise from Scripture:
1 Corinthians 10:13. “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be emptied beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
No matter the source of temptation, God will always provide for us all we need to overcome!

Love in Christ,

Pastor Dan

February Article

The “CALL”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in his epic book, The Cost of Discipleship, writes about this very thing. It is perhaps my favorite text in any book, other than the Bible itself. It is a must read and is copied below. The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, pg.57-58.
The call [to Levi] goes forth, and is at once followed by the response of obedience. The response of the disciples is an act of obedience, not a confession of faith in Jesus. How could the call immediately evoke obedience? The story is a stumbling block for the natural reason, and it is no wonder that frantic attempts have been made to separate the two events. By hook or by crook a bridge must be found between them. Something must have happened in between, some psychological or historical event. Thus we get the stupid question: Surely the publican (tax collector) must have known Jesus before, and that previous acquaintance explains his readiness to hear the Master’s call.

Unfortunately our text is ruthlessly silent on this point, and in fact it regards the immediate sequence of the call and response as a matter of crucial importance. It displays not the slightest interest in the psychological reasons for a man’s religious decisions. And why? For the simple reason that the cause behind the immediate following of call by response is Jesus Christ himself. It is Jesus who calls, and because it is Jesus, Levi follows at once. This encounter is a testimony to the absolute, direct, and unaccountable authority of Jesus.
There is no need of any preliminaries, and no other consequence but obedience to the call. Because Jesus is the Christ, he has the authority to call and to demand obedience to his word. Jesus summons men to follow him not as a teacher or a pattern of the good life, but as the Christ, the Son of God.

MY WORDS
I often reflect on my own life, especially in January because it is my Spiritual birthday month, and I wonder, “How does a man in his mid 30’s completely change his career of over 20years to go into the ministry and preach the Gospel?” I can only come up with one answer, “Because it was Jesus!” I simply could not say ‘no’ to him at that point. Make of that whatever you’d like theologically, but for me it simply points to Jesus and his authority as the Son of God, just as Bonhoeffer so beautifully articulates. When we meet Jesus and he calls us, “Come follow me,” there is only one thing to do – get up and go. We know from Scripture that some received the call and walked away, so it is obviously not automatic. But, for me, there did not seem to be any other credible option, and for that I say, “Thanks be to God!”

Let’s follow Jesus together!
