WARNING……WARNING: ADVENT VIRUS

Be on the alert for symptoms of inner Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to this virus and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.

Some signs and symptoms of The Advent Virus:
•A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.
•An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.
•A loss of interest in judging other people.
•A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.
•A loss of interest in conflict.
•A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a very serious symptom.)
•Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.
•Contented feelings of connectedness with others and nature.
•Frequent attacks of smiling.
•An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.
•An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.

Please send this warning out to all your friends. This virus can and has affected many systems. Some systems have been completely cleaned out because of it.

“Advent is the perfect time to clear and prepare the Way. Advent is a winter training camp for those who desire peace. By reflection and prayer, by reading and meditation, we can make our hearts a place where a blessing of peace would desire to abide and where the birth of the Prince of Peace might take place.

I found both of these anonymous quotes in The Pilgrims Almanac and thought they were very insightful.

May we all truly experience the “ADVENT” of Christ this Christmas.

God Bless,

Pastor Dan

God’s Truth Abides Still
This year is the 500thanniversary of the Protestant Reformation, spearheaded partially by German theologian, Martin Luther. We have sang A Mighty Fortress is Our God (a hymn credited to Luther), but I am keenly aware that we face competing forces against this radical message on a daily basis. Is God still “a Bulwark never failing” as this hymn so confidently declares?
Today, while appearances display a typical fall day, myself and perhaps many of you still contemplate the excruciating losses of the past several weeks (here at home, in our nation, and abroad).
I keep wondering about hope as a resource that seems scarce in times like this. For those who are most personally affected by tragic loss, God can seem altogether absent; it’s an incredibly lonely feeling – desolate even. And yet, as author Brennan Manning once said, “…suffering has often been the shortest path to intimacy with God.”
Let’s think about what he may mean for a moment:
It’s interesting to consider, God felt the absence of God on at least one occasion. To be clearer, Jesus felt the absence of the Father who accomplished the most profound act of ‘going off the grid’ on record. This is about as human an experience one can have. There is intimacy in suffering because the ultimate act of suffering was perhaps the most profound expression of the union of humanity and divinity. You cannot get any more intimate than God experiencing a very human death.
As a further illustration, in Philippians, the Apostle Paul expresses a longing to deeply know Christ: “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.” It seems that knowing God, as in the Hebrew word yada (intimate knowing), comes in part through suffering. While this strange approach does not, nor should it, remove the pain, it does provide hope where the world and the evil one would declare there is none. It is like worshipping at a loved one’s funeral with arms stretched high and tears pouring down your face – simultaneously expressing pain in death and hope for the resurrection. We express hope in a story that hasn’t ended. Or as Luther says, “God’s truth abideth still…”

“And though this world with devils filledshould threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God has willed his truth to triumph through us.”

May you all discover and abundant supply of God’s hope while we live in the midst of a suffering world.
Peace be with you all,
Pastor Dan

Christ Our Center

“God is the reality whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere.” -Blaise Pascal

Early Christians described the church as a wheel with spokes centered on a single hub. Out on the rim of wheel, the spokes are the furthest away from both the hub and each other. As each spoke moves closer to the center, they grow closer together. They are a single meeting in the one hub.

The image says something important about the abundant life Jesus offers us. The closer we are to him, our Center, the closer we are both to God and to each other. Jesus overcomes our isolation – from our truest selves, from God, from people around us – by giving us a shared experience in his risen Life.

I have been thinking about Christ as a “hub” a lot over these last few months. I’ve been studying the book of Ephesians in my devotional time, and discovered that Paul uses the phrase “in Christ” 27 times throughout the book to describe the vital, binding relationship Jesus forms between God and humankind.

He paints a picture of the Christian life where growth isn’t so much a process of acquiring new information or becoming something altogether different, but rather recognizing what (and who) we already are.

I take great comfort in Paul’s vision because, perhaps like some of you, I often worry about not doing enough in my relationship with God. I enjoy being a Christian much more when I remember it’s more about surrendering than is about acquiring. We’re spokes already in the wheel, all that’s left to do is move to the center.

Love in Christ,

Pastor Dan

REIGNITING YOUR PASSION FOR GOD

I recently came across and excerpt from a sermon I had saved that was written by Rick Warren, and want to share it with you all.
Remember, in the heat of the summer, we must be on fire for Jesus!

The creative force behind all great art, all great drama, all great music, all great architecture, all great writing is passion. Nothing great is ever accomplished in life without passion. Nothing great is ever sustained in life without passion. Passion is what energizes life. Passion makes the impossible possible. Passion gives you a reason to get up in the morning and go, “I’m going to do something with my life today.” Without passion life becomes boring. It becomes monotonous. It becomes routine. It becomes dull. God created you with the emotions to have passion in your life and He wants you to live a passionate life. Passion is what mobilizes armies into action. Passion is what causes explorers to boldly go where no man’s gone before. Passion is what causes scientists to spend late night hours trying to find the cure to a dreaded disease. Passion is what takes a good athlete and turns him or her into a great athlete where they’re breaking records. You’ve got to have passion in your life.
One day a man walks up to Jesus and he says, “Lord, what’s the most important thing in the Bible?” And you know what the Great Commandment is. We’ve talked about it many times. Jesus said, “I want you to love God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength. Nothing matters more than that. That’s the number one thing in life. I want you to love Me passionately.” Nothing else matters in life if you don’t love God passionately.

God doesn’t want you to love Him half-heartedly. He wants you to love Him with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind and all your strength.
I love the paraphrase of that verse, Mark 11:30, from The Message “Jesus said, ’Love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy.” Circle the word “passion”. That word, in Greek, is the word “heart.” God is saying I want you to put some muscle into it, put some energy, put some emotion into your relationship with Me. Don’t be a wimp about your relationship with Me. Don’t be namby-pamby. Don’t be half-hearted. Give it all you’ve got. Jesus is saying, “If you’re going to follow Me, you’ve got to go it with passion. You’ve got to give it some oomph, some spark, some zip, some enthusiasm, some zest. I want you to live passionately.”
In fact, this truth is all through the Bible. The Bible tells us that we’re to seek God passionately. We’re to love God passionately. The Bible says that we’re to serve and obey God passionately. We’re to trust God passionately. Then as if you didn’t get the message, in Colossians 3:23 He says “Whatever you do, do it with all of your heart as unto the Lord and not unto men.”
He says I want you to do everything passionately when it comes to loving Me, serving Me, living for Me.

May we all have great passion for all we do to bring glory to our Lord! AMEN.

Love in Christ,
Pastor Dan

June Caller

June Caller

I recently had two emails that came on the same day, and went together so well, I decided to share them both with you.

What God Is Doing

“I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without Me.” John 15:5 Your challenge each day is to find out what God is doing in the part of the world where you live, and join Him in doing whatever that is. How can your personal thoughts and actions, even attitudes, relate to the activity of God? How is God moving today in the place where you are? “God had made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing.” Ephesians 2:10 You know what God is doing by looking around you for evidence of His activity. You see God involved in institutions that care for people. He is obvious in causes that promote good values and strong principles. Be aware of where God is working, and join Him there. Discern the divine in everyday life, and join forces with God in what He is doing. Give yourself to God’s work.  “Dear God, show me what You are doing so I can help accomplish Your will in the world. Amen”

Our Place in this World

Take the time to read John 17, a prayer of Jesus.  Throughout the chapter, Jesus repeatedly differentiates his disciples from what he calls “the world.” The difference, Jesus maintains, is one of belonging. The disciples are different because they belong to Jesus, not the world, and therefore strive to not conform to the world’s values. Even though Christians do in fact conform to the world’s values sometimes is beside the point. In the eyes of Jesus, what makes his disciples different is not first and foremost how they live (though it is very important), it’s to whom they belong. Another way of saying this is that Christian identity is always positive; we’re defined by what we are – people who find their identity in Christ – not by what we are not. This positive way of framing the difference between Christians and non-Christians is a helpful reminder that we are to have a positive influence on the world and not have a passive, ‘I don’t care’ attitude and seclude ourselves from the world.  New Testament scholar, Richard Bauckham, summarizes this approach: “The way of Jesus’ followers is the way of Jesus himself – the Jesus of the Gospels who moved freely wherever his love was needed, compromising himself in the eyes of the holier-than-thou, but disturbing and attracting precisely by being so positively different from the ordinary way of the world. To belong to Jesus requires the courage to be different, to be like Jesus, actually for the sake of the world. And to belong to Jesus sets us free to be in the world, where people need us, where God needs us, without succumbing to the false gods to whom too many in our societies are enslaved.”  Summarizing these thoughts I believe our mission can simply put this way:

We are to –

Seek, See, and Be Jesus; Here, There, and Everywhere.

Love in Christ,

Pastor Dan

“Spring Fever”

We may think that we have it bad here in Kansas, waiting around 5 months or so for the return of warmer weather. People north of us wait longer, while some in the south don’t know what cold really is! We know how to celebrate the arrival of spring! Recognizing new buds on the trees, the first sighting of a robin, and feeling the warmth of the sun.

Can you imagine the spring fever Noah and his family must have had? They had been in the ark for over a year!

  1. The whole world has gone crazy.

They had forgotten their Creator. Violence had filled the land. God had enough. Judgment was pending.

So too, in many ways is our world today.

  1. I am glad that I am in the ark.

It took Noah and his family a year’s time to complete the building of the ark. During this time, he had been a preacher of righteousness. Only his immediate family would heed his warning of the coming flood. The total number in Noah’s church…. Eight.

When I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior, He placed me into his family. I became a member of his “Church.” I was placed into the ark of safety.

Our Church is not a “big” Church. But I am glad for the ark God has provided us, how about you?

  1. The world does not appeal to the child of God.

In our text, Noah sends out two birds from the Ark, the raven and the dove.

The raven is a flesh eating bird. It was at home with the floating decaying of debris. So, too, are the lost. The deadness of this world has an attraction to the lost soul.

Noah also sent out a dove. The appetite of the dove is for fresh and green morsels. The dove returned to the ark.

A babe in Christ desires holiness.

Every week the “doves” of our Church return to the ark. The world does not appeal to us. We long for the safety of the ark.

  1. Thank God for the olive branch.

The dove returned to the ark with a olive branch in its beak on its second flight. Can you imagine the joy this olive branch brought to Noah and his family?

What a message of “Spring Fever.” What a blessing to have the hope of life.

Every week, we join together as a Church in our “little ark” of safety. Every week, as we look into the Word of God, we are blessed with a glimpse of our hope of Heaven. The Holy Spirit, like the dove, captures our hearts with another “olive branch.”

Thank God for the Olive branches.

  1. Soon, I’ll be going home.

After the third flight of the dove, the dove returned no more to the ark. Over the years, many of the saints of our Church have taken their flight. They have departed from this world to return no more.

But, soon, as in this text, Noah and his family would leave their ark. It was spring time! God opened up the door. Can you imagine the joy that Noah and his family had on that day! It is what I imagine the garden of Eden would have been like.

Are you ready for Spring? Are you ready to take the third flight of the dove? Do you long for Heaven? Do you long for home?

Our prayer, “Even so, Lord Jesus, come!”

Love in Christ,

Pastor Dan
