Pastor Dan’s Article

A Great Cloud of Witnesses
We are never alone.
Hebrews chapter 11 is a history lesson of the Old Testament!
Abel brought a sacrifice. Noah built an ark.
Abraham obeyed God.
Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau.
Sarah trusted God’s promises.
Joseph was faithful in Egypt.
Moses led God’s people to liberation.
Rahab welcomed the Israelite spies.
We could add Peter, James, John, Paul, Mary, Clement, Polycarp, Justin, Augustine, Bonaventure, Theresa, Wesley, and many, many more.
By faith, these saints encourage us, even though they have crossed over into eternity. (Hebrews 11:4)

Hebrews 12 describes these faithful as the “great cloud of witnesses.” By faith, we realize and remember we are not alone in the race of faith. We are surrounded by the a great cloud of witnesses – past and present, earthly and heavenly. These ordinary people who exhibited extraordinary faith cheer us on and inspire us with their example. And leading the race is the crucified, risen, and ascended Jesus, “the pioneer and perfecter” of our faith.

This beautiful truth has brought comfort to the early Christians who experienced hardship, suffering, and even persecution. No doubt, as they were tempted to give up, these hopeful words by the author of Hebrews encouraged them to keep their eyes fixed on Jesus.

Are you ever tempted to give up the faith?
Remember you are surrounded by that Great Cloud of Witnesses to help you finish your race strong!

Love in Christ,
Pastor Dan

Pastor Dan’s Article

Abundantly living.
Moving on past Christmas season and ahead into the month of ‘love’, I’d like to ask “Why?” Why did Jesus come into the world? The Apostle John tells us: “God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.” (1 John 4:9; John 10:10)
So that; a very important phrase.
When reading Scripture you should always pay attention to “so that” and “therefore.” God the Father sent Jesus into the world so that we might live. In John 10:10 Jesus says that he came (so) that we might come fully alive; so that we might live an abundant life.
I want that, don’t you?
A life that is whole, complete, rich, and confident in God’s faithfulness.

What does this life look like? The answer, at least in part, is this: the abundant life of Jesus is marked by personal devotion – a life of prayer and reading God’s Word. This is foundational to having a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. So, how are your daily devotionals going so far this year?
I would encourage everyone to read through at least the New Testament in 2019. I will make you this promise: if you will daily pray and read the New Testament, you will be a different person when Christmas comes next year.

In addition to devotion, the abundant life that Jesus brings is characterized by generosity – living a generous life! I am continually amazed at how much you all give for the sake of the Church and God’s glory. May your generous giving bless your lives abundantly!

Finally, I believe Jesus came as a result of God’s love for us. He created us in his image so that we can have a personal intimate relationship of love with him. Remember, Jesus summed up all the laws of God by stating we are to love God with all we are and love others the same.
Abundantly living comes through abundantly loving.

May Jesus bless you this month in the season of love! You are amazing people and I love you.

In Christ,

Pastor Dan

Pastor Dan Article

God Speaks
The book of Hebrews begins with a very big premise: God speaks.
“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.”
The writer is showing us that, while the timing and method have changed, one thing is unmistakably clear – God speaks to us. How different would our everyday lives be if we held that truth more closely?

If we really believed the God of the universe desired to speak to us and he is always reaching out and trying to share his Word with us, it would change everything! Now, I don’t have the space here to write about how to listen to him well. So for now, I want us to focus on the simple premise – God desires to speak to us.

Take just a moment to reflect on it. The amazing love the God of the universe has for us so He just cannot leave us alone. He desperately wants to speak to us. He knows our heartaches and longings and he has a word for us. He sees our celebrations and joys and wants to tell us of his love and pride in us. He understands that we often feel lost and confused and he wants to guide us.

God speaks.
I believe if we took this truth more seriously, we’d walk around more attentive to him, more expectant. We would live our lives with a little more awareness of him, listening for him. May we all experience more of that as we move forward in our journey ahead.

Let’s listen for God together,
Pastor Dan
